1 Native American Village Economies and the Fur Trade in the Mid–Eighteenth Century In late August  Indian residents of the Fox-Wisconsin region were celebrating the harvest, finishing the work of summer, and preparing for the winter activities to come. During the month that the Sauks and Mesquakies called the Elk Moon and the Winnebagos knew as the CornPopping Moon, women picked crops, dried them, and stored most of this food in underground caches. As summer turned to autumn, men prepared their canoes for traveling and their weapons for winter’s hunting.

I also tried to present the subjects’ voices whenever possible. Hence, I begin the introduction and the last chapter with Hu ˛ wani˛kga and the things he was reported to have said about his region’s history and his own personal experience. Similarly, because travel was so important to Introduction  the people of the Fox-Wisconsin region, I have begun each chapter with someone arriving there after a long journey. In trying to develop a fresh approach to this material, I have attempted to move beyond the specialized focus of previous monographs.

The ways that cultures divided work activities by gender influenced their willingness to change in certain directions. For example, Native Americans in this region considered farming and lead mining to be women’s work, so Indian men would not team up with—nor follow the advice of—incoming white men to dig in the earth for crops or min-  Introduction erals.
