One was the help that I got from everyone else in the staffroom, getting to know how the college worked and things like that. The other was how much more stuff there was to learn that I thought could have been part of the Cert Ed, but I guess there isn’t time to fit everything in. Next year, the college is going to have a larger cohort of 14–16 year old learners and I am going to be tutoring a group of them. This year I have taught 17- and 18year olds, just like I did during my placement. And I was really worried at first about teaching younger groups.
That is to say, they sum up what that professional association thinks the members of the association should work towards or embody in their everyday working lives. Of course, these professional associations do not exist in isolation: they live in the same world as the rest of us, and are influenced, in part, by the same broader, social debates as we are – the debates and issues that we have covered in the preceding two chapters. In addition, they are influenced, more or less overtly, by the theoretical traditions that surround notions of professionalism, as we shall see in Chapter 6.
What the Fento standards did provide was a national framework that could be recognised as providing a sector-wide body of standards. From 1 January 2005 a new organisation, LLUK, began operating as the body responsible for – among other things – the professional development of all employees in the field of lifelong learning. A subsidiary organisation called Standards Verification UK took over the role of approving and endorsing teacher training qualifications in the post-compulsory sector that was once carried out by Fento, which has now ceased to exist.
