One cannot talk about data without discussing systems. Data clean-up will be more successful and productive if all elements of the organization buy in to the need and the mission of data. In a way, the data health of an organization is indicative of general organizational health and functionality. It may take administrative nurturing, even coddling, to secure general support and care for the data program. Library systems form the core architecture of that data program; it is to be hoped that the relationship with the organization will be productive and supportive.

Databases Librarians are expert at using databases to assist patrons with research, but many people are afraid of data and databases from the technical side. They are incredibly useful to librarians. Having a basic understanding about how databases work, what they are used for, and the kind of information that lends itself to collection in a database improves librarians’ depth of knowledge and helps them to make more informed decisions about the library’s collections and services. The basic elements in a database are entities, relationships, fields, attributes and values.

For example, a library wants to use non-COUNTER-compliant database usage data to supplement COUNTER Database 3 report data: database sessions and searches. Here are some data labels that were interpreted as database sessions: 25 Data Clean-up and Management ■ number of visits ■ user sessions ■ logins ■ sessions. The following data labels were interpreted as database searches: ■ hits ■ searches ■ number of views ■ activities ■ report views ■ articles viewed ■ queries.
